"Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, but is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel: whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles." (2 Tim 1:9-11)
A preacher, an apostle and a teacher...that's our appointment as well. How do the best teachers teach? Well, first they have to know what it is they are teaching. You cannot teach German if you do not know German. In order to successfully pass knowledge of something on to someone, you need to know what you are talking about. So therefore, we must study and learn before we can teach others.
I don't consider myself a teacher - an apostle, most definitely. I do not profess to have all the answers, but I know where they are. They are not in the back of the book - they are all through the book - His book - the Bible. Like anything else, in order to remain "educated" on a subject, you must continue to study it. "Studying" something can be as simple as continuing to perform according to what you are taught. As a student of phlebotomy, I learned many things that I will not necessarily need to do my job, but I was still required to learn them. As I certified phlebotomy technician, I am required to continue my education in the form of short, structured learning modules that apply to my field and the medical laboratory science field. In order for me to be a competent phlebotomy technician, I must continue to practice my skills. The same is true for a preacher, an apostle and a teacher of the Word of God. We, as children of the King, must continue to study His Word. Doing a Bible Study is a great way to dig deeper into what is written in the Bible. Living the Word is the way we continue to let others see the love of God in each of us.
Take the time to educate yourself. Continue to keep up on His Word. Be a reflection of His love by the way you treat the world around you. Be a preacher, an apostle or a teacher - of Jesus Christ!
