"And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence." (Col 1:17-18)
Being first in most things is preferable to being second, third or last. When you are the first - there is a certain respect that comes with that distinction.
The resurrection (Christ is "firstborn from the dead") shows us that Jesus is ruler over all things in the material world. If we trust and believe in Jesus, we, too, will rise again and live with him in eternity. His death raises him to the status that is rightfully his. He is spiritually supreme (preeminent). He deserves to be first in our thoughts and our hearts. He deserves to be first in all that we do.
Do you put Jesus first in your life? Do you give him the attention he deserves?
