"He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed." (Prov 13:20)
I do know a little about being in the company of fools. For many years, I found it comfortable and I could do what I wanted without any repercussions...or so I thought. "Fools" live for the moment. They have no regard for anyone or anything outside of themselves. They talk a good talk. Their focus is simple: fun. Life is not always all about fun.
The wise man is one who is well rounded, and well grounded. Matthew Henry tells us that "The rule by which the wise regulate their conduct, is a fountain yielding life and happiness". Ephesians 5:15 reminds us again to be careful how we live our lives, to be watchful and discreet.
All in all, we are told to live a life that is pleasing to God. How can we possibly do that if we are out chasing after celebrities every chance we get, or spending countless hours gambling away our money, or bar hopping until the sun comes up? Our Creator does not want for us to remove every enjoyable adventure from our lives, but he does want us to do it in moderation and with the understanding that he comes before all else. My mother use to tell me "moderation" - that's the key. The other thing we need to remember is balance. If we allow foolishness and the behaviors associated with it to overtake our lives, there will be nothing left to offer to God.
Don't be the fool who follows the fool...be the wise one people strive to emulate! Be a reflection of your Creator and enjoy the blessings that come with it!
