"Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be." (James 3:9-10)
Our contradictory speech often causes us to question which of the two is the "real" us. It is very difficult to go from the every other word explicative to none at all, especially when one has been doing it for a life time. There are times when the words creep out of our mouths in total disbelief of a situation. There are times when no other word seems to fit the emotion. And there are times when the anger rages so hot that you just cannot contain yourself.
We are good people. We are made in God's image. We are bad people, too. We are fallen and sinful. God works to change us from the inside out. As our hearts are purified by the Holy Spirit, we are given the self-control to eliminate these words from our vocabulary. Do we master it completely? No. We will never be perfect because we will always be sinners!
When we call upon the power of the Holy Spirit to help us in speaking only words that are pleasing to God, we are inviting an inner change. As our hearts cry out for what seems familiar somewhere in our wasted existence, we begin the metamorphosis into a pleasing, meaningful child of God!
